Perlis is Malaysia's smallest state, and its pet emergency profile mirrors its northern rice-bowl geography and Thai border. The state has roughly 8 registered vet clinics — most in Kangar and Arau — with consultation fees of RM 40–95, the lowest in Malaysia. Paddy-field pesticide poisoning from farm-runoff drains and snake bites (Malayan pit viper and cobra) are the most frequent emergencies seen at Kangar vets. The Padang Besar border crossing creates a low but real rabies-risk corridor from Thai border villages, making vaccination compliance essential for any pet that roams near the border. The Feb–Apr dry season regularly pushes temperatures above 35°C, producing heatstroke in working and farm dogs. There is no 24-hour vet in Perlis; the nearest after-hours options are in Alor Setar, Kedah (45 minutes) or Penang (90 minutes).

999Local Case Study
In Apr 2024, a farm dog in Arau was admitted to a Kangar vet with severe organophosphate poisoning after drinking from a paddy-field drain following aerial spraying. The dog presented with constricted pupils, drooling and tremors within 45 minutes. Atropine over 24 hours saved her, but the case prompted DVS Perlis to issue a paddy-season advisory: keep dogs indoors for 48 hours after any visible aerial spraying, and never let them drink from rice-field channels. The case is now distributed to every rice-farming household in the state ahead of each planting cycle.
